Born Of God

Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 1 John 3:9

We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not. 1 John 5:18

These two scriptures have caused much confusion among born again christians. They have even caused some to doubt their salvation.

The popular teaching that most christians accept is that these two scriptures mean that you should not "practice" sin or sin "habitually". It is a nice "theory". Certainly one that will make christians "feel" better about themselves, and not doubt that they are really "Born Of God". This "theory" fits in very nicely with the following two scriptures.

If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. 1 John 1:10

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 1 John 1:8

As children of God we have to admit that we do sin. The above scriptures tell us that we do. And we don't want to put ourselves in a position of saying or even thinking that we don't sin, thereby making God and Jesus Christ a liar, and deceiving ourselves. So it's much better to think that we at least are not "practicing" sin or sinning "habitually". I guess that gives us that "warm and fuzzy" feeling.

What other explanation could there be? After all, how could I possibly be "Born Of God" and never sin? That's not possible! So it works out nicely to think that I can be "Born Of God", and at the same time not be "practicing" sin or sinning "habitually".

I suppose to make this "theory" work we need to define what "practicing" sin or sinning "habitually" really means. Because the "scholars" that are pushing this "theory" on God's children don't really say themselves. . I guess they don't because there is nothing in the Word of God to support this "theory". But for the sake of argument let's say it means you cannot commit more than one to five sins a day? Now suppose you are really "good" and only commit three sins a day. That means you have committed 1,095 sins each year. I don't know, but in my book that sure sounds like you're "practicing" sin or sinning "habitually"! So in the end it's up to the individual christian to determine how much sin is to much. Does all of this sound really silly? It does because it has nothing to do with the Word of God. It is just man's religious ideas mixed into the Word of God in an attempt to make God's children feel better about themselves. Many "Born Of God" christians have become confused because they have not learned to discern the difference between the flesh and the spirit.

Whenever I feel confused about what I am reading or hearing from the word of God, there is one fact that keeps me from going astray. It is not God that is creating the confusion. It is me!

For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace,...... 1 Corinthians 14:33

In order to have the peace of God about all of this we need to first understand spiritually what the scriptures mean when it says "Born Again" and "Born Of God".

Born Of Your Parents - Born Of God

When you were physically born into this world, you were "Born Of Your Parents" and "Into This World". It is the only birth most people are familiar with. Those who are not saved or born again cannot imagine any other birth other than the one they have already experienced. This was true concerning a man called Nicodemus. Nicodemus was obviously an intellectual. An educated man with great understanding. And yet he responded to what Jesus told him with no understanding, and was totally baffled about how any of what Jesus said could be possible.

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? John 3:3,4

The confusion that arose between Jesus and Nicodemus was the direct result of Nicodemus attempting to use worldly wisdom, to understand what Jesus was saying. He was not able to understand or comprehend that the spiritual words that Jesus spoke were of the Kingdom of God, and not of this world. Nicodemus could not discern the difference nor could he understand that there indeed was a difference. But this inability to discern the difference between worldly or natural things of this world and spiritual things of the Kingdom of God is not unique to just the unsaved. Born again christians are experiencing the same problem. Although a person may be saved and born again, they may at the same time have a mind that is still worldly, carnal and natural in nature.

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Corinthians 2:14

To be "born again" spiritually is to be "born of God" into the Kingdom of God. This is in direct contrast to your natural fleshly birth that is to be "born of your parents" into this world. Jesus made it clear that there is no similarity between the two. It is as different as night and day.

That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. John 3:6

To be "Born of God" is not a result of anything we can do on this earth. It has nothing to do with this earthly existence. It cannot be earned by good deeds nor does it have anything to do with your status or religious beliefs. Jesus did not die on the cross, and rise again so that we could have religions. Religions are a direct result of man's inabilty to get along with one another. To be "born again" into the Kingdom of God is a miraculous event that only God, through Jesus Christ, by the power of the Holy Ghost can accomplish! It takes place when you repent of your sins, and ask Jesus Christ to be your Lord and Savour, and believe on His name.

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. John 1:12,13

What Is Born Of God?

You were born into this world with a spirit, a soul(mind), and a body(flesh), and God wants all three to be spiritually "in tune" with Him (1 Thessalonians 5:23 ). When you received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savour, God replaced your old spirit with a new one, so that His spirit would have a place to reside in you.

A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them Ezekiel 36:26-27.

The problem is that even after you received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savour, your mind and your flesh were still corrupt and not "in tune" with God. Your soul or your mind was still carnal and of the world. Your body or flesh had nothing good in it, and is constantly at war with God's Spirit that is now in you.

For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. Galatians 5:17

Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. Romans 8:7

For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. Romans 7:18

There is no question that as a born again christian you are "Born Of God"!

Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. 1 John 5:1

Now you can see that after being born again, you have a new spirit in which God's spirit resides. Your flesh is at war with the Spirit of God that is in you, and your mind is still carnal and needs to be renewed (Romans 12:2).

So the only part of you that was "Born Of God" was your new spirit! Your flesh and your mind are still capable of sinning. But your new spirit is incapable of sinning because it is "Born Of God", and the spirit of God dwells in it. And because of the presence of the Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ Himself now resides in you, and he is the sinless one!

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. John 1:12,13

To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: Colossians 1:27

Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 1 John 3:9

Please note the above scripture. When you are born of God "his seed remaineth in him". That means the seed who is Jesus Christ will remain in you. He is the one who cannot sin! Jesus is the "one seed" that God made the promises to through Abraham.

Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. Galatians 3:16

This seed, (Jesus Christ), that is in you is incorruptible. In other words this seed cannot be affected by sin. Your new born again, born of God spirit cannot and will not sin!

Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. 1 Peter 1:23

If you are born of God, then God connects you directly to the seed of Christ , and you automatically become an heir to the promise that God made to Abraham!

And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. Galatians 3:29

Now What?

Ok, let's take stock of what we have. We have a new "Born Of God" spirit that does not commit sin ( 1 John 3:9 and 1 John 5:18 ). This new spirit has God's Holy Spirt in it (Ezekiel 36:26-27). And also by the presence of God's Spirit, Jesus Christ is in me (Colossians 1:27). "So with all of this going for me, why is it that my life stiil does not conform to what the Word of God says it should look like?" "Why am I still doing the things that I did before I was "Born Of God?" "Why are those old "habitual" sinful habits still following me around?" "Why cant I control my temper, after all Jesus Christ is in me?"

As we have already seen in the Word of God, your flesh is not going to cooperate at all with God's program. It will continue to "war" against God's Holy Spirt that is in you. This war will go on day and night until the day you die. What makes matters worse is most "Born Of God" christians have not taken the time to renew their minds, nor do they realize that they should. It is a commandment of God. And that is where the problem truly lies, and this is why most christians never really know the will of God in their lives.

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:2

For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. 2 Corinthians 4:16

This is a process that should begin immediately after being born again. It is a process that will never end, until you leave this earth. Even though our "outward man", our flesh, will grow old and someday die, the "inward man", which includes your mind, must be renewed day by day.

Please read the article, The Unfinished Christian. This will explain the process of "Renewing Your Mind", and why this is so important.

Whosoever Is Born Of God

"Whosoever Is Born Of God", is an exact decription of YOU! But you may be thinking that "there is no way I will ever be able to "get my act together". "Everytime I try, I continue to fail." "I know I should be more like Jesus, but I continue to act like the exact opposite."

Well I have good news for you! There was another person who was born of God and had the same problems. Everytime he tried to do good, he ended up doing the very thing he hated. I'm sure because of what he had done in his past, he felt that he would never be able to overcome. And yet with all of his problems, he did indeed overcome. Or should I say Jesus Christ overcame through him. This person was a murderer, and specialized in torturing, and killing christians. His name was Paul. As a Born Of God christian he brought with him a lot of "excess baggage" as he entered into the kingdom of God, just like you and I have.

For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate. . Romans 7:15 ( NASB )

For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. Romans 7:18

Paul had a real problem controlling his flesh and his mind. But he learned how to renew his mind through the Word which is Jesus Christ. He allowed Jesus Christ to live His life through him. He knew that his flesh would continue to try and give him problems, but he found a way to overcome his flesh, and a way to overcome this world.

I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin. Romans 7:25

Paul is saying here that if you don't take the time to renew your mind with the Word of God, then your life will be directed by the god of this world (the devil), and by your flesh. You may be Born Of God. You may have the Spirit of God in you. You may have the very presence of Jesus Christ in you. But without a renewed mind, you will continue to live a life on this earth that is controlled by a carnal mind. A mind that is more influenced by this world, than by the Word of God.

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20

Be Of Good Cheer!

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. John 16:33
