The Covenant Connection.

Yes we actually have a covenant with God. Judging from the spiritual condition of most Christians you would never know it.Many Christians who actually know that a covenant exists, when asked have no idea what it is all about. The truth is, the covenant that we currently have with God, through his Son Jesus Christ, will virtually eliminate most if not all of the problems Christians are suffering from today.Such as Sin, family and marital problems, sickness and disease, fear and anxiety, the lack of love and compassion just to name a few.I have to admit that all of the above mentioned problems do exist not only in the secular world but also among Godís children. On the surface all this would suggest that either a covenant with God does not exist, or is no longer in affect, or only applies to whomever God chooses.

So what has gone wrong? Or has anything gone wrong? Maybe God cannot deliver his children from these problems in this world.Maybe God can only deliver us from some of the problems.Or maybe we just donít use the faith God has given us to overcome these problems.

For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. 1 John 5:4

God didnít say that we could only overcome some things in this world. He said we could overcome this world, period!

I realize that it is not my job to convince you or change your mind about how you view your covenant with God.That is the job of the Holy Spirit.Just as we are saved by faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We also receive the blessings from our covenant with God by the faith God has given us.

For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.Romans 12:3

So with that in mind, where do we start? Before we can ever hope to understand and partake of Godís covenant, we will need some background as to how this covenant came into existence. There is one thing that you need to understand before we go any further.Godís covenant blessings are only for those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Those that are Born Again. If you are not saved, If you do not know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and you are not sure where you will spend eternity, then see the document entitledSalvation.

There are many covenants in the Bible. The ones that are most important for the Christian to understand are The Abrahamic Covenant (God and Abraham),The Mosaic Covenant (God and Moses),and the Messianic Covenant (God and Jesus Christ). Here are some important points to watch for as we discuss these covenants.

†††††††††††† Who is the seed of Abraham?

†††††††††††† How are we connected to Godís covenant?

†††††††††††† What are the provisions (promises) of the New Covenant, and how do they affect us now, in this life?

†††††††††††† Which covenants are still in force today?

The Abrahamic Covenant

Nearly 2000 years passed since Adam and Eve disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden. This act of disobedience brought sin, death and despair on all future generations. But now a man named Abram, who was now 75 years old,†† was called by God.†††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††

Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will show thee,And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. Genesis 12: 1-3

It should be noted here that Abramís wife Sarai was not able to have children. This is a very important fact you need to keep in mind as we continue through this covenant.

But Sarai was barren; she had no child. Genesis 11:30

So Abram took his wife Sarai, his brotherís son, Lot and others and came into the land of Canaan where God once again spoke to him.

And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever. And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.Genesis 13:14-16††

This promise from God must have been a real shock to Abram, since Sarai was barren. This is were faith comes into the picture. When God makes a promise, we need to believe it by faith however long it may take.

Ten years have passed since God made this promise, and still no child for Abram. Now something begins to happen to Abram that Iím sure has never happened to you, impatience sets in.I donít know about you, but Iíll have to plead guilty on this one. If I were in Abramís shoes, right about now I would begin to look for ways to help God out. After all there surely must be a problem somewhere. Maybe Godís workload has just gotten to big or something.I guess what we need to keep in mind is that God intends to keep his promise in accordance with his time schedule, not ours.

Now can you believe it! Sarai (trying to help God out) offered Haggar, her Egyptian handmaid to Abram in the hopes that they could have a child this way. This lack of faith resulted in a son, who they named Ishmael in accordance with instructions that Haggar received from an Angel of the Lord.

And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son's name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael. Genesis 16:15

God again speaks to Abram, fourteen years after the birth of Ishmael.

And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for aneverlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.Genesis 17:7-8

During this time God changed Abramís name to Abraham and Saraiís name to Sarah.Abraham was now 99 years old and Sarah was 90 and still barren. Just as Sarah did, Abraham began to suffer from the same dreaded disease, IMPATIENT-ITIS. Abraham wanted God to make Ishmael the heir to Godís promise since there was no earthly way that Sarah could ever have a child. But this was not to be just an earthly birth but an outright miracle from God. The stage is now set and spiritual history is about to be made. There would be no question as to how Abrahamís and Sarahís child would come into this world.

And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation. But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year. Genesis 17:19-21

When God makes a promise he intends to keep it!Your particular circumstances or what may be going on in the world or what people may say or do will not affect the promises of God.This applies to any of Godís promises in the Bible.Godís plan will not be altered.God will do for you just as he did when the Jews were backed up against the Red Sea with no way out! HE WILL MAKE A WAY WERE THERE IS NO WAY!

There is a principle that we need to understand here. Abraham learned how to tap into Godís hope, which is the word of God.He learned how to use his faith in conjunction with Godís hope to see in this world the substance of what God had promised. Just as Abraham did, you can use the faith that God has given you, and apply it against your hope (the Word of God). This then will produce in this world a substance of that which you were hoping for. Such as a loved one accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior,or a physical healing. For more information on this see the ďFaith and HopeĒ article from the main page under ďStudy ReferenceĒ.

Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, so shall thy seedbe.Romans 4:18

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1

A year later, as God promised, Sarah bore a child and called him Issac. Now if you think the birth of Issac was a miracle, imagine what Sarah was thinking at the age of 91!By the way, by the grace of God she survived!

Now in light of all of the wars and killings and hatred that have been going on in the Middle East, think about this. From one of Abrahamís sons with Haggar, Ishmaeal was born. And from Ishmaelís lineage we get the Arabs. From Abrahamís other son with Sarah, Issac was born. From the lineage ofIssac we get the Jews. Both sides are claiming that because they are direct descendants of Abraham they have the right to the land God had promised to Abraham. There are of course many arguments from both sides. But keep in mind that in Genesis 17:19-21, Godís covenant is with Issac and the Jews!

To be included as a seed of Issac would insure that one would be included in the family of God and heirs to great spiritual†† blessings.

So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. Galatians 3:9

By now your probably thinking, that this covenant is really great for Abraham, Issac and the Jews, but what does all of this have to do with me?Before we can see the answer to that we first must look at the covenant God made with Moses.

The Mosaic Covenant

So here we are 430 years after God cut his covenant of promise with Abraham and his seed.God is now entering into a covenant with Abrahamís descendants through a man named Moses.

And the LORD said unto Moses, Write thou these words: for after the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with thee and with Israel. And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments. Exodus 34:27-28

The Mosaic Covenant(the Ten Commandments) were given by God as a restatement of the Abrahamic Covenant. And in no way nullifies or makes void the covenant God made with Abraham.Moses himself conveyed this point to Godís children when he said.

Wherefore it shall come to pass, if ye hearken to these judgments, and keep, and do them, that the LORD thy God shall keep unto thee the covenant and the mercy which he sware unto thy fathers:And he will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee: he will also bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep, in the land which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee. Deuteronomy 7:12-13

And this is reaffirmed by Paul when he said.

And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.Galatians 3:17

It should be said here, that in reality the Ten Commandments were given to bring the Jews to God. There has never been nor will there ever be a person that could actually follow and fulfill the Ten Commandments. In Godís eyes, if you break just one of the commandments, you are guilty of breaking all of them. When it comes to the Ten Commandments, itís all or nothing.

For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. James 2:10

The Jews should have looked at the Ten Commandments and realized that only God could fulfill and abide by them. The Commandments should have caused them to drop to their knees and ask God to forgive them. There was no way they could ever fulfill the law of the Ten Commandments. Now on top of all this the ďCurse of the LawĒ was given by God, which you can read in Deuteronomy 28.If you follow and abide by the Ten Commandments, you will be exceedingly blessed. On the other hand, if you would break one of the laws (as you saw above, you are guilty of all the law), then you would be exceedingly cursed.

Now you may be thinking that this is a terrible predicament to be in.This is a no win situation. The Mosaic Covenant held out no hope to the people of Isreal, for all had transgressed it.The sacrifice of spotless animals was the only way that manís sin could be covered up. But this would not remove sin. Sin demands that the penalty of death be paid, but there was no one worthy enough to pay that price. There would be only one person that could be worthy enough to pay the terrible price for sin. There is only one who is spotless and without sin.Now the time has come for the entrance into this world of the only begotten Son of God. The spotless lamb, who would give his life for you and me.Jesus Christ, the seed of Abraham!

Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. Galatians 3:16

The Messianic Covenant

Finally a perfect sacrifice to redeem us from the curse of the law (The Mosaic Covenant)is now made available to all mankind. His name is Jesus Christ. The seed we have all been waiting for. This covenant will be between God and Abrahamís seed, Jesus Christ. As always God requires the shedding of blood to forgive sin.In the past it was the blood of spotless animals that covered the sin of man. Now the shed blood of Jesus Christ will remove your sins as though they never existed. The cross will be the symbol of Godís covenant with man through Jesus Christ.

Since man fell to sin in the garden of Eden, God has demanded that a heavy price be paid, so that man once again could walk and talk with God.The full intent in the beginning was that we could spend an eternity with God, and enjoy the very presence of Godís Love.God set the conditions to get back into his good grace in the Ten Commandments. This is the ĎLawí, it cannot be changed. But just as God always does, he never leaves us helpless. He never asks us to do something that couldnít be done. This is the Word of God, and only the Word of God could ever satisfy Godís requirement to fulfill the Law!God himself came to this earth as Jesus Christ!

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John 1:14

During his ministry on this earth, Jesus Christ fulfilled the Law.He walked perfectly before God.There was no sin found in him.He had plenty of opportunities to strike back, to hate, to not forgive. But Jesus came with a message of love. That message was and still is, God loves us!God has been at work through the centuries to fulfill a plan to bring salvation to all mankind.Jesus fulfilled that plan.Jesus had satisfied Godís demands for a perfect sacrifice.A sacrifice of love and forgiveness. This then fulfilled the law.

Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is brieflycomprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.†† Love worketh no ill to his neighbour:therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.Romans 13:8-11

There is more good news. It was mentioned above that the ĎCurse of the Lawí was added, read Deuteronomy 28.The curse of the law results in manís inability to fulfill the law. Deuteronomy 28 not only defines the curse of the law but also the blessings of the law that you will receive if you abide by Godís commandments. The only way you can avoid the curse and enjoy the blessings is through Jesus Christ. We will talk more about the curse of the law, but what you need to know for now is this.

Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Galatians 3:13

There is still more good news.Through Jesus Christ you will actually be accepted into Godís family.God will consider you an actual seed of Abraham. All of the promises God made to Abraham are now yours.

For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.†† And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. Galatians 3:26-29

There is no curse for those who enter into the New Covenant through the blood of the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ. The price for sin has been paid once and for all. If you are not saved, and you donít know Jesus Christ as you Lord and Savior. If you want to be sure where you will spend eternity. Then read the document entitled, Salvation, and become part of Godís family.

Just as in any covenant or agreement between two parties there must be a full understanding of all the conditions of the covenant. We must understand what happened on that cross, that was so powerful, that it would have the power to actually remove our sins. So far this is what we have discovered.

He brought them forth also with silver and gold: and there was not one feeble person among their tribes Psalms 105:37

Now we must look at what we have actually been delivered or redeemed from. We must also understand what our responsibilities are as covenant children with God.Remember that whatever Jesus did on the cross, you no longer have to do.

To understand how much God loves you and what he has redeemed you from through Jesus Christ on the cross. To know that God is concerned about the whole person, spirit, soul and body. Then read Healing / Divine Health.
