Peace Be Still

The world is desperately searching for peace at every level. From heads of state of great nations to parents trying to raise their families, and everywhere in between.

Webster describes peace as "A state of tranquillity; absence of war; freedom from fears or worries etc". That hardly describes the state of affairs in this world, or the environment in most families today. I am in my sixties, and I can not remember a time when Webster's definition of peace ever applied to this world we live in. Could it be that the worlds definition of peace is incorrect? Could it be that there is no such thing as peace in this world? Could it be that the world is searching after the "wrong peace"!

The peace that the world has to offer is unstable, and uncertain. One minute there appears to be a calm, and the next chaos. The devil is using the world's unstable peace to bring havoc, and fear into the lives of God's children. Christians are more focused on what is going on around them and less focused on the word of God. Sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between the "saved" and the "un-saved". I want to show you a peace that is sure and fixed. A peace that cannot be changed or affected by what is going on in this world or in your own personal life. A peace that is available to you as a born again child of God.

Two Kinds Of Peace

First we must understand that there are really two different kinds of peace available to us. One of the world, and the other of the Kingdom of God. The world has its own version of peace, and it is actually called peace. But it is unsure, unstable, and not desirable. God's peace is from the Kingdom of God and is stable, fixed, and unchanging. The good news is that it is available to every born again believer in this world. Jesus made it very clear that there are really two kinds of peace.

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27

If you allow the worlds peace to get into your life then you will experience exactly what Jesus commands us not to experience. A troubled heart and fear! The heart that Jesus is referring to is your mind, and the way you think. The worlds peace will cause fear, and trouble to enter into your mind and actually begin to dictate how you think and react to things around you. Let's look at an example how the world's peace can change your life, and get your attention completely away from God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost.

And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side. And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him? Mark 4:35-41

There are many things to learn from these verses. Things that will change your life and the way you live your life. You will understand that because you have the very presence of God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost in you, then you have overcome this world, and everything it represents. All it takes is faith! Sound simple? Well actually it is. Think about it for a minute. Why would a loving God try to make believing in Him and receiving from Him so difficult? Especially when He made it very clear, that we through Jesus Christ are to overcome this world.

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. John 16:33

The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. John 10:10

Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. John 4:17

What Boat Are You In?

The world has a saying when things are not going very well, or when they are trying to convince you that you have to take whatever life has in store.

"We are all in the same boat!"

How many times have you heard that saying? I lost count. Well I have bad news for them. I'm not in the same "boat" they are in! Ever since 1976 when Jesus came into my life, I climbed out of their "boat", and into the "boat" with Jesus. I know my "boat" will not go down. How could it? Jesus is in it with me, hallelujah!

The first thing to notice in the verses from Mark 4 is this. Jesus said "Let us pass over unto the other side." That means it doesn't make any difference what 'storms of life' may arise. Your "boat" is going to the other side, end of story. That is not open for discussion! Jesus is the Word (John 1:14). When the Word makes a statement then that is exactly what you can expect to happen, In this situation, Jesus (the Word) said "Let us pass over unto the other side". Once Jesus made that statement nothing could change their desitnation. Not a storm, winds, waves, or the fact that their boat was filling with water. The only thing Jesus required was "Faith" in Him (the Word).

The Peace Before The Storm

The world's peace works just like the weather. One minute all is calm in your life, and the next a storm arises out of nowhere. But remember that "storm of life" has nothing to do with God's Peace. It is nothing more than the world's unstable peace going out of control. Notice what Jesus said after he arose from sleeping in the back of the boat. He spoke to the peace of the world (the wind and the sea that had gotten out of control), and said, "Peace be still". The peace of the world had to obey him, and there was a great calm. Then he turned to his diciples and wanted to know why they had become so fearful, and why they had no faith. Jesus expected them to use their faith and believe what He (the Word) had said, "Let us pass over unto the other side". The diciples allowed fear to enter into their minds, and that fear caused them to be totally focused on the "storm" around them , and not on Jesus (the Word). That is exactly what the devil is doing to so many of God's children. The devil is dictating through fear how they will experience life. The devil has their attention and focus on the "storms of life" and not on the Word of God. That fear will cause you to get your attention off the love of God expressed through his word, and torment you as you focus on "the storm".

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. 1john 4:18

Ok, So Where Is This Peace?

Have you ever had something really valuable? Like an important document. It was so important, that you put it in an obvious place so you wouldn't forget where it was, Then when the time came that you needed it, you couldn't remember the "obvious" place where you put it! Ok, so this hasn't happened to any of you, but guess what? I'm still looking for stuff to this day! The funny thing is that a lot of the stuff that I eventually found, was right in front of me all of the time. You know, that "obvious place".

You see God's Peace is just like that. God had to put his peace in an "obvious" place so we wouldn't forget where He put it!. You probably thinking, "I'm really going to be upset if it's been in front of me all this time!" Well don't get to upset. God's peace is not right in front of you, it's in you! That was the most obvious place God could think to put it. Who would ever think to look there? Well the sad thing is that most of God's children really don't think to "look inside". There running here and there, trying everything they know to do, just to get some peace. But if you are a born again child of God, then His peace has been inside you all this time. You see as a child of God you have been given His precious Holy Spirit who resides inside of you. And it is the Holy Spirit that was the "obvious place" for God to put his peace!

Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? 1Corinthians 3:16

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. Galatians 5:22,23

I know we are only talking about the peace of God, but take another look at Galatians 5:22,23. God put a bunch of stuff in the "obvious place". Something to think about!

How Can I Experience This Peace?

God's peace is inside of you. It is an inner peace. It cannot be touched, changed or affected in any way by external forces of this world. This is the reason Jesus was completely resting in the peace of his Father, God. And it was God that revealed to Jesus what to say and do,[John 14:10]. It was God that directed Jesus to "pass over unto the other side". Jesus mind was completely focused or stayed on what God said. That caused him to be at peace. Our minds are to be completely fixed or stayed on the word, which is Jesus [John 1:14]. In doing this we to will be at peace, knowing that God will take care of us.

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Isaiah 26:3

So then it is faith in what the word says that will cause you to experience God's peace. And there is only one way to experience faith. By the word of God!

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17

Since God's peace is in your spirit by the Holy Ghost, then it is faith in what God has said in his word that will cause that "built in" peace to go from your spirit to your soul, or your mind. It is this process of focusing on the word of God that will cause your mind to be completely stayed on God and what he has said. It will cause your mind or your soul to be renewed. Then you will be at peace, even though the "storms of life" may be raging all around you. Remember, in Christ you will overcome!

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:2

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. John 16:33

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety. Psalm 4:8

Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them. Psalm 119:165

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. Colossians 3:15

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. Galatians 5:22,23
